Mutton Liver and Blood Vathakkal Recipe:

Mutton recipes are my all-time favorite recipes because it is very tasty and challenging to cook. All spices have to coordinate with mutton for better taste. Usually Mutton takes more time to cook than chicken. But some parts of mutton like the liver, brain, and Blood take less effort and less time to cook.
In this blog post, I am going to share my easy and simple two mutton recipes. One is Mutton liver vathakkal and the other one is Motton blood vathakkal.

What is Vathakkal?

Vathakkal in English means sauteing. Vathakkal is the process of stir fry the ingredients in high heat to cook quickly.

First, we will see the mutton liver vathakkal recipe, this recipe is very easy and very healthy especially for old people and pregnant women.

Ingredients required for Mutton liver Vathakkal recipe:

  • Mutton liver (Aatu Eeral)- 250 grams(for 3 people)
  • Onion (Vengayam)- 1 big size(finely chopped)
  • Gingelly Oil (Nallennai)- three tablespoons(you can also use normal cooking oil)
  • Pepper (Milagu)- two tablespoons
  • Cumin Seeds (Seeragam)- one tablespoon
  • Salt (Uppu in Tamil)- As required for your taste
  • Turmeric Powder (Half tablespoon)- half tablespoon

Cooking Method Of Mutton Liver Vathakkal:

  1. Take an Iron Pan, for dishes like vathakkal it is recommended to use an iron pan because we have to cook the dish on high flame.
  2. Add three tablespoons of gingelly oil and wait till it gets heated. Gingelly oil will give a special taste to this recipe and it is also very good for health especially for pregnant women.
  3. Once the oil gets heated, add finely chopped onion and saute till the onion becomes soft and pink in color.
  4. Now add chopped liver pieces(thoroughly washed), crushed pepper, cumin seeds, salt, and turmeric powder, and saute well.
  5. Mutton Liver is a very soft item so it will get cooked soon. Cover the pan with a lid, for every five minutes open the lid and saute the liver.
  6. When the liver color becomes brown, turn off the stove and decorate mutton liver vathakkal with some freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
Next, we will see the Mutton Blood Vathakkal recipe, it is also an easy recipe as Mutton Liver Vathakkal recipe. But the difficult step in this recipe is cleaning the mutton blood, you have to carefully clean the mutton blood. You will find many videos on youtube about cleaning the mutton blood, so watch some videos before cleaning.

Ingredients required for Mutton blood vathakkal recipe:

  • Mutton Blood (Aatu Ratham)- One full goat blood
  • Gingelly Oil (Nallennai)- two tablespoons(or As required)
  • Green Chilies (Pachai Milagai)- 6(equally sliced) 
  • Turmeric powder (Manjal Thool)- one little pinch
  • Grated Coconut (Thengai Thuruval)- one full cup
  • Onion (Vengayam)- 1 medium-size(finely chopped) 
  • Curry leaves and coriander leaves (Karuveppilai, Kothamalli)- As required(you can also skip this)
  • Salt (Uppu in Tamil)- As required per your taste

Cooking Method of Mutton Blood Vathakkal Recipe:

  1. Goat blood will be in a frozen state. First, you have to knead and dissolve it in water the steps will be explained fully in videos. 
  2. After kneading, filter the water from the blood. Now our goat blood is ready to cook.
  3. Use the iron pan for this recipe. Put some oil in the iron pan, once it gets heated add finely chopped onion, equally sliced green chilies, curry leaves to it, and saute well till the onion changes its color.
  4. Then add the filtered blood, salt, and turmeric powder into it and saute well in high flame.
  5. Blood will get cooked very soon, once the color of blood changes turn off the stove and garnish it with some finely chopped coriander leaves.
  6. Serve it hot with some idli or chapati for good taste.
